Total Permanent Disability (“TPD”) insurance sometimes referred to as Total Disability pays a lump sum if you become totally and permanently unfit for work as a result injury or illness. TPD claims commonly arise as a result of an injury sustained at work or in a motor vehicle accident or because of a serious illness.  They can often be made through a super fund.

If you are unsure if you are insured for TPD, it is a good idea to contact your superannuation fund or to check the most recent annual statement received from your super fund. 

To become a candidate, you must meet the definition of TPD stated in the insurance policy. While the definition varies depending on the policy, a common example is you become ill or injured and as a result:

• you’ll never be able to do at least two of the five everyday working activities, without physical help from another person, even with the use of medication and appropriate aids. You must have been unable to do the everyday activities for at least six months in a row since you became ill or injures, and 
• you’re being treated by and following the advice of a medical practitioner for your illness or injury, and
• because of your illness or injury it is unlikely that you will work in any job that you’re suited to based on your education, training, or experience.
